The Student Merit and Junior Investigator (SM/JI) Meeting Awards provide financial assistance to a limited number of individuals each year who are the presenting author of a poster or a symposium speaker at the RSA Annual Scientific Meeting. These awards are funded through a grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and are intended to help defray costs associated with attending the meeting.
Awards may cover meeting registration only or meeting registration plus a minimal travel stipend.
All individuals seeking these funds must submit an application. Applicants must also submit a speaker or poster abstract by the annual abstract submission deadline.
Eligibility
Junior Investigator
-
No more than 4 years past completion of their degree
Student Merit
-
Must be a graduate or undergraduate student
-
Undergraduate applicants do not need to be the presenting author; however, only one applicant per abstract will be accepted
-
All student applicants must submit a verification letter confirming their student status. The letter may also briefly describe the applicant’s recent research activities and may be provided by a department chair, advisor, or office manager.
Selection Criteria
Award recipients will be selected based on:
-
The merit of the submitted abstract
-
Stated financial need included in the application
Additional consideration may be given to students and junior investigators from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) or underrepresented regions.
Notification and Registration Process
Applicants will be notified once the Student Merit and Junior Investigator Award Committee has reviewed applications and made selections.
If you are selected for a registration-only award, the cost of meeting registration will be waived directly in your account. You will then be notified and may complete your meeting registration at that time. SM/JI applicants will not receive a registration code.
Applicants are encouraged to finalize their meeting registration after receiving award notification, including reserving spots in optional events that require RSVP (such as the Student Lunch or Post-Doc Dinner). You may reserve spots in these events before award notification, but do so at your own risk.
If you paid for meeting registration prior to applying, your registration fee will be refunded if you receive an award.
