Nadia Chaudhri Rising Scholar Awards

A travel award opportunity for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from backgrounds that are diverse, under-resourced, marginalized or traditionally under-represented in psychosocial (defined broadly, i.e., sociological and clinical research) and biomedical (defined broadly, i.e., basic and biological human research) sciences to attend the RSA Annual Scientific Conference. Graduate students or postdoctoral fellows are eligible. NCRSA winners will be selected based on an evaluation of the complete application (please see details below). NCRSA winners will be publicly announced at RSA, invited to participate in the graduate student or postdoctoral events, and paired with mentors who have committed to helping NCRSA winners successfully navigate the meeting. NCRSA winners will have the opportunity to present their research as a poster or talk at RSA. Applicants must be first and presenting author on the submitted abstract, and only one application per person and per abstract may be submitted.

Application (in pdf format for file upload):

  1. In 500 words or less, please describe your reasons for applying for this award and indicate how you meet the eligibility criteria.
  2. Academic curriculum vitae (CV).
  3. A letter of recommendation (on letterhead; 2-page limit) from your mentor, advisor or an individual familiar with your work at your current institution. The letter should confirm your status as a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow, certify your qualifications and describe your contributions to the research you are presenting at RSA.
  4. Your original abstract as submitted to RSA for poster or speaker presentation.
  5. To give us an indication of your financial need, please provide a budget table (1 page max) indicating proposed expenses and any other guaranteed sources of funding. Appropriate expenses include: RSA abstract publication fee, travel, accommodation, and meal per diem. If childcare is required to enable meeting attendance, please include this information for consideration. This information will not be used in the award evaluation.

Eligibility:

The NCRSA is available to graduate students or postdoctoral fellows from the following groups:

  1. Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians, Alaska Natives Aboriginal People of Canada
  2. South Asian, (Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, the Maldives, Sri Lanka) and Southeast Asian descent (Hmong, Vietnamese, Filipino and other Pacific Island populations)
  3. LGBTQQIP2SAA individuals
  4. Individuals with a disability(ies)
  5. From an historically marginalized or disadvantaged background

Applicants can only receive the NCRSA award one time as either a graduate student or as a postdoctoral fellow.

There is no requirement for the applicant to be a citizen of the United States.

There is no requirement for the applicant to be an RSA member.

Applicants must be the first and presenting author on the original, submitted RSA abstract.

NCRSAs include up to $2,000 reimbursement* (PDFs of original receipts required) or waiver of the following expenses:

  • RSA meeting registration fee - waived with provided discount code
  • RSA abstract publication fee - refunded post-award notification
  • Lodging (5 days maximum at an RSA contracted hotel(s); one-half room fees and taxes), (provided through complimentary room nights per meeting venue contract)
  • Taxi or rideshare services, excludes car rental and premium services (reimbursement)
  • Airfare (economy class or equivalent) (reimbursement)
  • Airport parking (5 days maximum) (reimbursement)
  • Meal per diem ($50/day, 5 days maximum) (reimbursement)
*Those who cannot receive monetary reimbursements (due to affiliation rules), post-meeting, should not apply.
