Of 94 respondents who completed the survey, the majority (74.2%) reported having a doctorate-level degree (e.g., MD, PhD), with more than 10 years of experience post-degree (51.7%) and working in an academic institution (76.6%). The most common research areas were experimental/human research (41.5%), intervention or program development (31.9%), and laboratory/basic science (29.8%). With respect to grant experience, 42.0% had been awarded an R-series grant. Thus, this represents a largely experienced cross-section of the alcohol research field.

There was high interest in implementation research alongside limited experience with it. A majority (54.3%) were at least very interested, and only 5.4% reported no interest at all. Most characterized their familiarity as beginner-level (45.7%) or novice (20.7%). Consistent with this, just 17.8% reported any prior or current involvement in implementation research training programs.

Despite relatively high interest, few felt adequately supported: only 13% reported adequate addiction implementation research training and mentoring at their home institution. Although the sample size is relatively small with unclear representation of the population of the RSA community, these findings signal a need for alcohol implementation research training and support, particularly for established alcohol researchers seeking to incorporate implementation methods into their work.
